Year 8 Induction
All pupils joining St. Paul’s College are assigned a Form Teacher. This member of staff is their main contact in the College and for the first few weeks of the new term oversees the canteen, buses, curricular issues, etc. An Induction Booklet is sent to every prospective year 8 pupil during the summer months giving a detailed breakdown of the school day.
Year 12 prefects are trained to act as mentors to junior pupils. The older students look out for students in Year 8 and help them with the practical issue of moving classes, and adjusting to the two week timetable.
They also listen to any concerns they have in terms of friendships and settling in. One of the highlights of the first term is a two day, residential activity break, in Woodhall Outdoor Pursuit Centre, Kilrea. This residential allows students to cement friendships, make new acquaintances and work as a team.
Year 8 Curriculum
It is important for the pupil, the parent and the teacher that pupils are placed in an appropriate class. Class placement is based on information received from the Primary School’s Transfer KS2 results and on the basis of a computerised test in English and Maths given at the end of their P7 year.
There is continuous assessment in all subject areas throughout Year 8 and pupils can change class groupings based on their work rate and ability. Any pupil experiencing difficulties will be referred to the SENCO for support and assessment.
